Mongolia’s Most Famous Festival

Naadam is the most famous, interesting festival and national holiday of Mongolia, attracting worldwide attention.Every July, the country bursts into color and celebration as people gather to honor traditions that have been passed down for centuries.

The origin of the festival dates back to the great warriors’ period — the era of the legendary Genghis Khaan in the 13th century. What began as a way to test the skills of warriors in times of peace has now become a symbol of national pride and unity.

Naadam means “festival” or “feast of sports.” Locally, it is called “Eriin Gurvan Naadam,” which translates to “The Three Manly Sports.” These are Mongolia’s traditional competitive games: horse racing, archery, and wrestling.

This time, I’m sharing a short video from my visit to the Central Stadium in Ulaanbaatar, where I set out to discover two of the most iconic events — Archery and Mongolian Wrestling. The atmosphere was electric, with archers aiming their handcrafted bows with precision and wrestlers showing incredible strength and technique in the open arena.

Naadam is more than just a sports festival — it’s a living connection to Mongolia’s history, culture, and spirit.
